Leading helicopter experience operator join forces with NZ’s premium aviation and adventure tourism business.

Heletranz Helicopters and INFLITE announced today that they have merged following a long-term close working relationship in Auckland. The two New Zealand-owned entities will together become the country’s largest premium aviation operator. Its helicopters and fixed-wing fleet of aircraft now stretch across New Zealand.

Sofia and John Ambler have steadily grown their family owned and Auckland based, Heletranz Helicopters, and will further add growth when they open their new private hangar early in 2020.

Sofia Ambler, Director of Heletranz Helicopters added,“We’re very excited having bought into INFLITE, we have worked closely together developing a great partnership over the last couple of years which has resulted in our successful merger. Our biggest focus has always been on the experience and Heletranz will continue to thrive and plan to expand the brand throughout the Country.”

“It’s great news for our teams and our customers. Our businesses share the same family values and commitment to safety and customer experience. We’re also excited to be joining forces with iconic operations like Mount Cook Ski Planes and Helicopters with one of the earliest customers being Sir Edmund Hillary 65 years ago”, she added.

Sofia and John will take a significant shareholding in the new entity and join its senior leadership team.

INFLITE offer a range of private air travel, skydiving, glacier experiences, scenic tours and charter flights solutions nationwide. It has bases in Auckland and Taupo, and is particularly strong in the South Island, with operations
in Aoraki/Mount Cook, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef, Motueka and Twizel. INFLITE brands now include Heletranz Helicopters, INFLITE Charters, Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters, Nelson Tasman Air, Skydive Abel Tasman, Skydive Mt Cook and Skydive Franz Josef & Fox Glacier.

“Our whole team is very excited about the future for INFLITE and Heletranz Helicopters as a combined business” says Adam Joyce, CEO of INFLITE. “Joining forces enables us to offer a greater range of options
for our customers throughout New Zealand, and puts us in a strong position for future expansion. The opportunities ahead for our sector are enormous, with demand for premium travel and adventure tourism growing fast. We have enjoyed a great working relationship based on shared values and priorities for a long time, so this came as a natural extension of that. Our locations, aircraft fleets and people are very complementary.”

Winston Aldworth flies from Albany to Tantalus Estate on Waiheke for an elaborate lunch date with Heletranz

The aircraft: An Airbus Helicopters EC130, aka the Eurocopter. It’s a beaut machine, and will buzz along happily at north of 200km/h.

My seat: I had a window seat in the back on the way out and a spot up front on the way home — basic helicopter joyride etiquette dictates that you swap around for the return journey so everyone gets a chance at the best view possible.

Service: Check in is swift (“Hi, I’m Winston.” “Great. You’ll be off in a few minutes”). Our pilot Jules Miller is your classic Kiwi aviator: Matter-of-fact safety briefing (check); well-rehearsed one-liner about not inflating lifejackets inside the cabin
(check!); bone-dry humour (check!), sunnies on (check!) — we’re ready for lift off!

How full: There’s room for two passengers in the front seats, alongside the pilot, and four spread across the back. So, seven seats in total.
There’s plenty of space inside. The EC130 has, it’s claimed, the largest cabin of any chopper in its class.

Fellow passengers: A couple of social-media types in the influencing business and the fabulous Sofia Ambler, owner of Heletranz.

Food and drink: Store your tray tables, folks — you won’t be needing them. After our short, stunning jaunt across the Harbour, we land at Tantalus Estate, onWaiheke.
The place looks stunning as we twist into our descent. We’re there to check out the Heli Wait & Return Spring Special, a fabulous long lunch for high-rollers and those (like us) who are more high-five and faking it.
Things start well — we’re greeted upon landing with a glass of Tantalus Methode Traditionnelle. From there, we take a table on the outside deck where — wait for it, Aucklanders — it was too hot to sit in the direct sun. We settle in quickly for an excellent three- course lunch.

Chef Tino Passano was recently named as the Australasian Tapas Champion for 2019, and will be representing New Zealand at the World Tapas competition in Spain later this year. Yes, it’s a thing. He does fine work on our lunches — one at the table opted for the beef, the rest of us dove into divine snapper.

Flight time: We’re in the air for around 15 minutes each way. The helicopter will wait a maximum of two hours for you to have your meal.

Price: The price per person gets better the more you have. For six people, it works out at $540pp; for two, it’s $1260pp. (You can also do two people in a Robinson R44 for $930pp.)

Entertainment: We flew on a mint day (one of those ones where everyone starts talking about how winter must definitely be finished), getting a fab view of Team New Zealand doing sea trials and taking an angled banking fly-by for a good look at Rangitoto’s crater. The best view? When you’re seated up front and can see the ground whizzing past through the bubble canopy right by your feet.

The final word: A superb celebration of the best of Waiheke.

Charter your own helicopter to fly you right over the top of Rangitoto Island and to the heart of Waiheke Island! and enjoy a lavish three-course lunch at one of the island’s top wineries. This is an experience you’ll be talking about for years…

Heletranz: Sprucing up the luxury tourism market – NZ Herald.

Sofia Ambler and her husband John, a former Cathay Pacific captain, bought helicopter business Heletranz in 2012. Ambler explains her role and how the business is bringing new experiences to the luxury tourism market.

A brief description of the business

Heletranz is all about the experience. We offer charter helicopter flights all over New Zealand covering both local flights to Waiheke, and also longer itineraries that could be 10-days over the whole of New Zealand. It’s quite a diverse business starting from $199 gift vouchers to itineraries more like $200,000.

In the winter Heletranz could have one flight per day and in summer up to 20, so the number of daily flights we have is seasonal.

Why did you buy Heletranz in 2012?

My husband John and I lived in Hong Kong for 12 years and Sweden for three, and whilst we were living in Stockholm this opportunity came up and we decided to combine John’s love for flying and my interest and love for client service.

I’ve always been very keen on planning the ultimate holiday and that all came together with Heletranz – tailoring the best experience, which is not really hard having New Zealand as your playground.

We combine the best of world-class wine, food, nature and scenery. What attracts many people from overseas is that New Zealand is perceived to be a safe and clean country, where you can get out into nature without it being overcrowded.

Tell me a bit about yours and John’s background?

John is a Kiwi and I’m Swedish. I moved here in 2013 and I’d never lived in New Zealand and I’ve definitely never worked in aviation so it was all very new. John was a captain on a 747 jumbo jet for Cathay Pacific, and on his holidays to New Zealand during his 20 years of doing the job, he learnt to fly helicopters and that was his next passion in life. He now flies helicopters and private jets.

We have three daughters and New Zealand is probably the best place for us to live and so we were looking for an opportunity to settle in New Zealand, where we could work together or both be involved. I have a background in stock broking and private banking so I thought I could do that, I didn’t really think I would be this involved in the business, but as it turned out, when we brought Heletranz we needed to put quite a lot more money into it than what we originally thought so John had to stay in Hong Kong and keep working for Cathay so we could have a bit more of an income while I ran Heletranz. We bought the business whilst living in Sweden, and moved to Auckland three weeks later.

How big is your team and where are you based?

We have 12 regular staff members, including eight pilots, but this fluctuates slightly with the seasons. Our heli-port and office is based in Albany, North Shore. We try to run the business as a small family so everyone feels part of the success. We’ve got a really good crew and several of the key people have been with us from the start, so it’s definitely more of a family feel than a corporate feel.

Sofia Ambler: Flying High.   Westpac REDNews – Inspiring Women.

“Originally from Sweden, Sofia Ambler moved to Auckland in 2013 with her husband John to buy Heletranz, a helicopter charter business. She recently took over the New Zealand chapter of The Luxury Network, the world’s leading luxury affinity marketing group and she’s a big believer in the power of mentoring.”

“Ladies, let the ladder down…and haul the others up behind you,” are the closing words of Diane Foreman’s book, ‘In the Arena’. In the book Foreman shares some of the lessons she’s learned on the way to creating a globally successful business empire, lessons that inspired Sofia Ambler to work harder and smarter on her businesses.

“Reading Diane’s book was a wakeup call for me,” she says. “I already knew I needed to do a lot of the things she talked about, but I hadn’t actioned them.

“After reading ‘In the Arena’ I promised to stop making excuses. More importantly, it made me think I can do this.”

“Sofia and John decided to focus on the charter business and high end tourism. Since they bought the business they’ve gone from two helicopters to seven, and Sofia’s client facing skills have been instrumental in that growth.

She works closely with inbound tour operators and concierges in the hotels while brand collaborations have also been really important to the business.

“I saw the value of collaborating with other brands rather than spending all of our marketing budget on advertising or PR,” says Sofia. “That’s how I got involved with The Luxury Network.”

Heletranz the first to offer IFR Service in NZ

“Auckland-based Heletranz has become the country’s first commercial helicopter company to introduce an expensive service which allowed it to fly in about 95 per cent of conditions. Heletranz has introduced an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) service, which meant darkness and poor weather were no longer barriers for its helicopter flights.
The service was common in Europe and the United States, but Heletranz was the first company to offer it in New Zealand to non-emergency travellers.” – Stuff NZ
