White Island Adventure
A scenic helicopter flight from Auckland to Whakatane via the Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel Peninsula, over bush and white sandy beaches, and the port of Tauranga, before landing at Whakatane.
Transfer to a Kahu NZ for the flight to White Island, passing overhead the dormant volcano called Whale Island or Moutohora. Watch out for whales, sharks and dolphins. As you fly towards White Island, the volcano grows in stature until you are high above it circling in full awe of its spectacular presence. The view from the helicopter is absolutely unmatched, providing a superb platform for aerial photography of White Island’s unique geological formations, colours and raw power.
Your experienced pilot/guide will then gently set you down on the floor of the crater for your one hour guided tour of the volcano. The walk takes you on a visual spectacle surrounded by the constant noise of active fumoroles scattered throughout the confines of the crater. Venture across the crater floor, crossing over small stream’s, stand on the edge of the crater-lake and through the remains of the sulphur factory before returning to the helicopter for the flight back to Whakatane.
The island is closely monitored by NZ scientists, but nevertheless being a volcano the Island is not without its hazards. Licensed operators take visitors to the island and provide hard hats, masks and the supervision necessary.
Re-board your Heletranz Helicopter in Whakatane for a return flight to Heletranz Heliport, Albany.
