Dolphin Point is a fabulous Simon Carnachan architectural
3 bedroom home, which was designed from a breif
in which he was asked to model the house on the
World War II lookout bunkers dotted around Waihekes
coastline. Bunkers merge into the hills and gives
the sense of creating a fortress. This minimalist
and serene, glass and concrete house perches on
a hill that descends steeply to Church Bay below.
Its deceptively simple in design with three
sides that wrap around an internal courtyard with
a lap pool at one end.
A row of columns overlooking the pool draws the
eye out and beyond to the horizon, creating a
clever play of shadow and light. The monochrome
pale grey of the walls forms a sharp contrast
with the technicolour views of nature framed in
the large windows. The way the shadows fall change
the appearance of the space, depending on the
time of day. The house is designed so that one
can lock all the external doors yet open all the
internal glass sliding doors that surround the
courtyard, creating a wall-less space open to
the elements. Once inside, there is no distinction
between outside and in, yet one feels like they
are in their own protective cocoon.
Each side of the house can be independently shut
off, forming three distinct living spaces, its
particularly useful when one has guests to stay. The
minimalist theme is carried through to the interior
design, which was deliberately kept to a neutral
colour palette of creams, greys and stone. Vases
of verdant green magnolia leaves and bowls of
limes and feijoas add colour and texture. The
furniture is both simple and practical, easily
at home inside or out. The walls are left bare
as every window in this house frames a beautiful
image so there is no need for paintings. Why add
colour when the grass outside is so green and
the sea so blue?
The five acre property faces northwest with spectacular
views across the Waitemata Harbour to the city
in the distance. Mature native trees surround
this totally private property, which has a small
olive grove and access to a secluded beach. The
contemporary beach house with polished concrete
floors, is set around an open internal courtyard
with fireplace, barbeque and pool. It has three
double bedrooms, all with their own bathrooms,
an open plan kitchen, dining, lounge and TV area
with large fireplace. There is a separate office
with broadband connection available. Another outdoor
area is adjacent to the kitchen with an open fire.
Staying on Waiheke means simple pleasures such
as shopping locally and entertaining family and
friends. The kitchen is the natural focus of the
house, designed with the help of Robyn Carnachan,
the architects wife. An expansive island
bench made of unfinished concrete is the place
where people gather to lap up local delicacies
bought at Waihekes Saturday market such
as Te Matuku Bay oysters. The bread is dipped
in olive oil made from fruit harvested in the
olive grove that surrounds the house and sold
under the label Number 29.
Dolphin Point is a 35 minute ferry ride from
Auckland and just a five minute drive from the
ferry terminal and shops and within walking distance
from the Cable Bay and Mud Brick Vineyard Restaurants.
It is a 10 minute helicopter flight from Auckland
direct to the property.
